Meeting biodiversity information and taxonomic needs in East and Southeast Asia
A draft strategy for the East and Southeast Asia Biodiversity Information Initiative (ESABII) has been agreed in Tokyo by representatives from prospective member country governments from East and Southeast Asia together with participants from relevant organisations and networks. Agreement came at the end of a three day meeting 12-14 December organised by the Biodiversity Center of Japan under the Ministry of Environment. It is proposed that the initiatve contributes to the implementation of the Strategic Plan for the Convention on Biological Diversity through the development of biodiversity information systems and taxonomic capacity building in the region. BioNET representatives at the meeting included the Secretariat, BioNET-ASEANET (ASEAN country partnership) Secretariat and Regional Coordinator BioNET-PACINET (Pacific Island partnership). BioNET has been asked to serve on the steering committee.

Project development workshop for the Global Taxonomy Initiative in Africa
The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and BioNET (Secretariat and BioNET-EAFRINET) organised a workshop 16-18 November 2009, hosted by the National Museums of Kenya, to promote fundable project proposals for the implementation of the CBD's Global Taxonomy Initiative with a focus on taxonomy for invasive species management. Eighteen scientists from across Africa were chosen to participate. With the help of resource people from NHM, London, the Global Invasive Species Programme, the Global Invasive Species Information Network and IUCN plus insightful presentations from donors (UNEP-GEF, JICA and LifeWeb), the participants refined their project concepts and learned about the project development process. Most of the project outlines are now being developed into full proposals targeted at particular donors. The workshop was supported by the Governments of Spain and Switzerland.

International Year of Biodiversity: UNESCO Science-Policy Conference
BioNET is supporting the organisation of the UNESCO International Year of Biodiversity launch conference, 25-29 January, Paris. "The biodiversity knowledge base" session on 27 January will aim to highlight the relevance of taxonomy for biodiversity and human well-being, present insights into new ways to accelerate the discovery and application of taxonomic knowledge, and reflect on how to meet new demands and overcome barriers in education and communication. Presentations and panel discussions will link taxonomy to the conference themes of development, biogeography and conservation science, conservation priority setting and mainstreaming biodiversity in policy making.
