Status The proposal to establish SACNET was developed at a regional workshop hosted by Bangladesh in June 2003. The LOOP was formally established in 2006 with the endorsements of Sri Lanka (2003), Nepal (2005), and Bangladesh (2006).
Member countries 3: Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka; subject to
endorsement 5: Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Pakistan.
Context Taxonomic capacity is unevenly distributed in South Asia yet there are common issues in biodiversity, trade, health and agriculture that require taxonomic expertise and resources. SACNET has been designed as a partnership for technical cooperation and capacity building to help all the countries in the region meet their taxonomic needs in a sustainable way. In designing SACNET, particular attention has been given to supporting implementation of the programme of work of the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) of the Convention on Biological Diversity and other sustainable development and conservation priorities.
Goals and Priorities
- Strengthening information services and
communication among taxonomists and between taxonomists and users
of taxonomy.
- Training of taxonomists and technicians.
- Supporting the development of
collections.
- Development and application of appropriate tools and technologies in taxonomy.
Current activities
- Work with the GTI and CBD national focal
points and Formulation Workshop participants in securing country
endorsements of the LOOP formulation proposal.
- Promote SACNET and its establishment and
integration with all aspects of biodiversity work at appropriate
regional and international fora.
- Coordinate the activities of the network on behalf of the LCC once the LOOP is formally operational.
Recent achievements
- In May 2007, SACNET co-organised a
meeting with Species 2000 Asia Oceania and the Biodiversity
Research Group of Bangladesh to plan a South Asian Biodiversity
Information Facility.
- In September 2007, SACNET co-organised the Second International DNA Barcode of Life Conference in Taipei, Taiwan, together with the Consortium of the Barcode of Life (CBOL) and the Academia Sinica.
