BioNET's African partnerships help complete the World Bee Checklist
The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) has recently made available The World Bee Checklist, a complete list of all the world's 19,436 named bee species, about 2,000 more than previously estimated. There is a current crisis known as "colony collapse disorder," an unexplained phenomenon that is wiping out colonies of honey bees. This has highlighted the need for more information about bee species and their interactions with the plants they pollinate. The Afrotropical bee names were supplied, and will be maintained, by the African Pollinator Initiative (API), which is a joint project involving several BioNET partnerships, namely SAFRINET, EAFRINET, and WAFRINET. Should anyone have queries concerning either API or Afrotropical bee names, contact the BioNET-SAFRINET Regional Coordinator, Connal Eardley e: eardleyc@arc.agric.za. Working with specialists around the world, ITIS is a vital component of the United States Geological Survey - National Biological Information Infrastructure. Source: Physorg

Mobilising biodiversity information for science and society in East Africa

Over 60 participants from across East Africa joined with experts from Asia, Central America and Europe to participate in three workshops 26-29 March 2008 to examine how to make information on species held by institutions in the region accessible to users in research, conservation and development. “Policy level” participants examined issues and opportunities related to sharing data. “Technical level” participants received training in informatics. A BioNET-EAFRINET project development team planned how to put the ideas and skills into practice. Hosted in Kenya and organised by Botanic Gardens Conservation International and BioNET-EAFRINET, sponsors included the JRS Biodiversity Foundation, Global Biodiversity Information Facility, National Museums of Kenya, BioNET and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
