BioNET 2007-10: “significant accomplishments…an impressive set of outcomes”
An evaluation of BioNET’s work and potential was recently commissioned by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation – a major sponsor of BioNET’s Global Secretariat. The final report is now available: click here. The report was prepared by a team of external evaluators with expertise in international networks, the Convention on Biological Diversity and plant health. It is highly appreciative of the achievements of BioNET – regionally and globally - in the 2007-10 period: "In sum, in 2007-2010 BioNET has had significant accomplishments in all four areas of strategic work and achieved an impressive set of outcomes that strengthen the network, enhanced the ability of taxonomists in 105 countries to respond to end-user needs, and contributed to an enabling policy environment." Those interested in working with or supporting BioNET in implementing its 2012-16 strategy are invited to get in touch: e: bionet@bionet-intl.org

A business plan for a “Special Fund” for taxonomy
Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity invited BioNET to lead the establishment of a new “Special Fund” to address the need for long-term sustainable funding of human and institutional capacities and to mainstream the use of novel practices in taxonomy. The results of a two-year Concept Phase 2008-2010 have now been compiled and presented as a business plan for developing a Global Taxonomy Partnership Fund. The document offers a working model for the Fund framework and development and a basis for in-kind, technical and funding partners to support the next, Preparatory Phase of the project. The business plan and further outputs of the Concept Phase are published here.

Growing Latin American interest in BioNET
Scientists and policy representatives from Latin America, including Argentina’s national focal point for the Global Taxonomy Initiative, participated in a taxonomy symposium in November 2010 during the First Latin American Congress on Biodiversity Conservation, San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina. The symposium included a half-day discussion on if / how the Southern Cone countries of Latin America should participate in BioNET. Organisers and facilitators included Professor Mercedes Lizarralde de Grosso, BioNET-LATINET interim Coordinator, and Dr Julio Mena-Portales, BioNET-Cuba Coordinator. The BioNET Secretariat was a sponsor of the congress and contributed to the design of the symposium. The Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity provided a supportive statement.

‘Understanding the world around you’ presentation available in eight languages
Following the publication of this popular introduction to taxonomy in English (view here), French, Spanish, Kiswahili and Hebrew, the Powerpoint presentation is now also available in Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese from the BioNET Outreach webpage. It also features on the new BioNET Taxonomy CD-ROM and at BioNET’s interactive computer kiosk at the tenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, October 2010, Japan. Translation into Arabic is planned and volunteer offers for translation to further languages would be highly appreciated. You are invited and encouraged to use the presentation for education and outreach, particularly to celebrate 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity.
