Support capacity building and networking at national, regional, and global levels
Assess taxonomic capacity needs and support partnerships capable of addressing problems at the international scale and priorities expressed by political and regulatory bodies. Assist and provide guidance on regional and global network building, sharing of good practice, governance and management of the LOOPs, and resource mobilization.
Accelerate the development of taxonomic resources, tools and technologies
Provide a communication platform to maximize the transfer of information and expertise relevant to the application of taxonomy among BioNET’s network partners. Support strategic partnerships of its regional hubs with expert centers in the developed world and with relevant regional and global technology partners to promote the uptake and mainstreaming of new technologies and accelerate the output of end-user driven taxonomic products and services. Conduct taxonomic needs assessments and encourage the prioritisation of taxonomic effort to promote optimization of taxonomic products according to local needs. Disseminate taxonomic products to users.
Support the Global Taxonomy Initiative, the CBD and other conventions
Assist countries implement the various multilateral environmental agreements such as the International Plant Protection Convention and the Convention on Biological Diversity, especially the latter’s taxonomic capacity building component, the Global Taxonomy Initiative. The regional LOOPs have been recognised as appropriate structures through which many of the regional components of the GTI Programme of Work can be most effectively implemented.
Promote taxonomy through outreach activities, PR and communication.
Represent the interests of taxonomists and taxonomy institutions in global, regional and national policy fora and play a leading role in advocacy and policy development for taxonomy. Promote taxonomy to other institutions in the biodiversity landscape, as well as to the public and business sectors as an indispensable knowledge base for many fields of human interest and an essential component contributing to the sustainability of our planet.
