Latin American declaration on taxonomy
A declaration on the Importance of taxonomy in Latin America (especially Mercosur) was agreed by scientists and policy representatives participating in the Symposium on Taxonomy: Continuity and Change, a BioNET-LATINET workshop held at the First Latin American Congress on the Conservation of Biodiversity, San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, 22-26 November 2010. Organisers and facilitators included Professor Mercedes Lizarralde de Grosso, BioNET-LATINET interim Coordinator, and Dr Julio Mena-Portales, BioNET-Cuba Coordinator. The Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity provided a supportive statement. New BioNET coordinator team for Tanzania
We are pleased to announce that Mrs Neduvoto Mollel of the National Herbarium of Tanzania (Tropical Pesticides Research Institute) is the new BioNET-EAFRINET Coordinator for Tanzania. She will be assisted by Mr Maneno Chidege, an agricultural entomologist. Mrs Mollel is replacing Dr Afihini Ijani who retired last year. Dr Ijani’s contribution to BioNET-EAFRINET has been much appreciated and will be greatly missed.

East African teams trained in producing identification tools
Teams of experts in the biology of pollinators, pests and invasive plants in East Africa met
at the Tropical Pesticides Research Institution in Arusha Tanzania for a three-day hands
on training course in the use of Lucid software for the development of interactive keys and
factsheets under the BioNET-EAFRINET UVIMA Project. Facilitation was provided by Matt Taylor, Director of CBIT (Centre for Biological Information
Technology at the University of Queensland in Brisbane Australia), developers of the Lucid software. Assisting was Dr. Marinda Koekemoer, curator of the National Herbarium, Pretoria, South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).

A new strategy for the East African network for taxonomy
Representatives from leading institutions practicing and applying in East Africa met 4-7 October 2010 at the University of Makerere, Uganda, to develop a strategy for the regional BioNET-EAFRINET network. Experts from BioNET networks in North, West and Southern Africa contributed to and learnt from strategy and work plan training.
