3GTW-Paris hosted by UNESCO, Paris, 12-14 February 2003
From
3GTW-Pretoria
The 300 participants from 95 countries at 3GTW-Pretoria identified nine
strategic elements required to implement the GTI Programme of Work via
a global strategy for demand-driven taxonomic capacity building - see
the draft
Global Strategy agreed at 3GTW-Pretoria. Each element was identified
as necessary but in itself insufficient for overcoming the taxonomic
impediment. A number of actions required to realize each of the nine
strategic elements were identified in Pretoria, each of which will require
commitments from one or more partner to implement. Concerted action
on all nine elements is required.

Commitments to a Plan of Action
The key component missing after 3GTW was 'who' was going to carry out
the activities listed. The 30 Participants at the Paris meeting were
from organisations and initiatives that are willing and able to take
responsibility, individually and jointly, for implementing certain actions.
Participants were invited to identify where they were already undertaking
activities, where they could make new contributions and where collaborative
efforts could be initiated. BioNET's future
A further important objective was to identify via the stakeholders present
any future role BioNET-INTERNATIONAL's Technical Secretariat might have
in implementing the Plan of Action once BioNET's original mandate -
establishment of the Global Network for Taxonomy - is complete.
This consultation has identified some
possible future roles for BioNET's Technical Secretariat.
