Training course in "contemporary taxonomy" - Cuba
With the support of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), Belgian National Focal Point of the Global Taxonomy Initiative, and jointly with the Centro Nacional de Biodiversidad and Cuban Technical Focal Point to the Clearing House Mechanism (CHM), 41 young Cuban taxonomists belonging to 10 Cuban Institutions, completed a one week “National GTI training course on good practice in contemporary taxonomy” in Havana, led by Dr Yves Samyn with Dr Naomi Cuervo, Dr Esteban Gutiérrez and MSc Jacqueline Pérez as assistant lecturers.

Priority-driven barcoding for life comes to Eastern Africa

The first regional workshop on DNA barcoding was held 18-19 October, Nairobi.  The workshop was organised by National Museums of Kenya, the Consortium for the Barcode of Life, BioNET-EAFRINET and BioNET-INTERNATIONAL in partnership with the International Center for Insect Physiology and Ecology, Kenya Wildlife Services and Research Programme on Sustainable Use of Dryland biodiversity.  Several science and policy matters related to “DNA barcoding” were examined and priority applications of the technology in the region were identified. Plant conservation strategy reviewed
BioNET representative Dr Mónica Moraes was among 28 participants invited to assist in a Liaison Group meeting, October 23-25, to review implementation of Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) of the Convention on Biological Diversity.  Prior to the meeting, BioNET undertook a survey via its networks world-wide to gauge taxonomic awareness and involvement in GSPC implementation to date.  For more information on the meeting contact Dr Moraes, BioNET-ANDINONET Bolivia Coordinator, at bionet@bionet-intl.org
