Developing nations eligible for European funding
The first round of calls for the European Union's US$69 billion Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) was announced on 22 December. For the first time, researchers in developing countries will be able to apply for European funding under nearly the same terms as European researchers, as opposed to a limited amount of funding for earmarked projects.  Source: SciDev.net

Tree bark molecule may combat malaria

Tazopsine, a compound derived from the bark of a tree, Strychnopsis thouarsii, in Madagascar's eastern rain forest, has potential as a preventative treatment for malaria.  The bark is the sole ingredient in a traditional tea used as a treatment for malaria infection. Source: SciDev.net

Leadership training for Ecoagriculture in East Africa
The Regional Coordinator represented BioNET-EAFRINET in a one week course in Leadership for Ecoagriculture in East Africa, 12 to 18 November 2006 in Naivasha, Kenya. The course was organized jointly by Ecoagriculture Partners, the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the University of California-Berkeley, Center for Sustainable Resource Development.  BioNET is an Ecoagriculture Partner.
