Biodiversity and Environmental Resource Data System (BERDS) of Belize

Belize Tropical Forest Studies, in technical partnership with TransNatura LLC, have developed the Biodiversity and Environmental Resource Data System (BERDS) of Belize.  BERDS is a comprehensive biodiversity and environmental data warehouse and research system built to enhance collaborative research and conservation efforts in Belize.  It offers a combination of data, services and tools as well as the integrated application of spatial functionality throughout the system continue to distinguish BERDS as a leader among its peers. BERDS features include:

*Extensive resource profiles for documents, maps, people, organisations, projects, events, multimedia, etc.

*Species profiles (taxonomic, biologic, physiographic, hydrologic info & distribution maps; 6400 spp.)

*Exhaustive profiles for protected areas, ecosystem types, watersheds,  etc.

*Specimen collections database with detailed profiles & maps; currently 20,000 records

*System-wide GIS technologies for visualisation and data analyses

*On-demand mapping application with 30 queryable thematic layers and visual search engine

*Wide variety of text and graph-based data reporting and analysis tools

*Database and analysis facilities for group-based environmental monitoring programmes

*Public and private discussion forums

*Secure web-based data administration facilities allowing complete anytime access to user data
 
BERDS is designed to serve the needs of the general public, providing open access to all the basic features and data. Data Providers can contribute their own data, and in return, utilise BERDS data and tools to undertake research and enhance management activities, free of charge.  Sponsoring Members receive access to additional features including a customised mapping application using their own data and layers, a comprehensive environmental site monitoring system, a private library database and much more.
